How much money should be taken?
There is a great variation in
the attitude of the participants regarding spending money. Based on past
experience we feel that $80-$100 per week is adequate for incidental needs,
snacks, stamps, and laundry (exclusive of gifts). Most participants will want
to bring back gifts for friends and parents and will need additional money for
this purpose. We suggest that there be a parent/participant understanding on
what types of expenses are appropriate. Spending money tends to become a
problem because of the differing amounts brought by participants. Staff will
hold participants' money (optional), passports, and airline tickets.
Are ATM cards and credit cards accepted?
Yes, but you should not rely solely on ATMs. ATM
cards with "Cirrus" are generally accepted abroad. Also, ATMs
connected with checking accounts (NOT savings) are more likely accepted. Visa
and MasterCard are widely accepted. We recommend equipping your son/daughter
with an ATM/credit card to be used in case of emergency.
BE SURE TO KNOW THE PIN# (AS NUMBERS, NOT LETTERS).
Payoneer Debit Card
This is a short term prepaid MasterCard. It offers easy access to spending money
around the world. It can be used
worldwide in stores that accept Debit MasterCard. The Payoneer Card can be
used to withdraw local currency from ATM machines. Please click on the Payoneer
Debit Card link for more information and a short video of how it works.
Credit car or cash?
It is a good idea to have
both. A combination of cash and credit card is recommended. Staff will assist
in changing currency. $50 US currency should be saved throughout the trip for
the return home.
* STAFF WILL HOLD MONEY
(OPTIONAL), PASSPORTS, AND AIRLINE TICKETS FOR PARTICIPANTS THROUGHOUT THE
